It was not an easy trip coming to America in the 1800s. How did John Dollhopf get here?
Above is the SS Baltimore, the iron passenger ship on which John Dollhopf sailed to America on October 23, 1871. This photo was taken seven months later on May 22, 1872, when the Baltimore collided with the Spanish steamship Lorenzo Semprum off the coast of Hastings, England. The collision left a large hole, 18 feet long and 7 feet wide in the bow causing the forward compartment to fill with water and list to starboard. The ship was eventually, repaired, and made a total of 51 trips between Bremen, Germany and Baltimore, Maryland.
